What can I expect with hormone therapy?

As part of the transition process, men and women may desire hormone therapy. Dr. Pabis is experienced in creating a custom treatment plan to help you find the right hormones to achieve a successful transformation.

For transgender women, estrogen can feminize the body, while anti-androgens can reduce masculine characteristics. For transgender men, Dr. Pabis can provide testosterone to reduce feminine features and increase masculine characteristics.

After a thorough medical exam, Dr. Pabis can determine the right course of hormone therapy to help you reach your goals.

How long does it take for testosterone therapy to work?

Typically, within three months of starting testosterone therapy, you can expect significant changes in your body. These changes can include:

  • Vaginal atrophy
  • Stimulated libido
  • End of menstruation
  • Increased clitoris size
  • Increased body and facial hair

You’ll also notice an increase in muscle mass and changes in the distribution of body fat. Your voice will become noticeably deeper as therapy goes on.

When will I see the results of estrogen therapy?

Estrogen therapy can take up to two years to reach its maximum potential. Changes you can expect from estrogen therapy include:

  • Breast growth
  • Increase of body fat
  • Decrease in testicle size
  • Reduced erectile functionality

Dr. Pabis can help you determine the dosage amounts of estrogen you need to achieve your desired results.

Is transgender hormone therapy effective?

The hormone therapy necessary for the transgender transition is very effective. Once you begin your transition, you’ll need a lifetime of medical care and support from Dr. Pabis.

If you decide to keep your natural reproductive organs, prostate or ovaries, Dr. Pabis will discuss the need for cancer screenings in the future, as hormone therapy can increase your risk for certain reproductive cancers.

Taking estrogen pills when you’re over age 35 or if you’re a smoker can also increase the likelihood of medical complications, including blood clots and stroke.

What other transgender medicine services are available?

Dr. Pabis offers comprehensive medical care for your total health and wellness, including annual physicals, blood pressure screenings, and other health risk assessments, with your unique needs in mind.

The custom treatment plan Dr. Pabis creates addresses your physical, mental, and emotional health, starting as you move forward with hormone therapy.
